Atwell and Aubin Grove sit in the City of Cockburn, either side of the Kwinana Freeway around Beeliar Drive and Rowley Road. Atwell went in through the 1990s, Aubin Grove filled in behind it through the 2000s and into the 2010s, and the Aubin Grove train station, built just inside Atwell's boundary, is the reason most people treat the two as one address. We run out from Hope Valley on the freeway most days, usually 18 to 22 minutes depending on the run.
Both suburbs sit on the Spearwood dune system: free-draining yellow sand over a core of Tamala limestone. Diggers usually get through the first metre or so without much trouble, then hit rock, which is why retic trenches in the older Atwell streets often run shallow and dog-leg around a limestone shelf instead of cutting straight through it. The upside is stable footings and a driveway base that never turns to mud in winter the way clay ground does. The trade-off shows up at soakwell time, where hitting rock partway down means the hole needs backfilling with a free-draining stone rather than relying on the ground around it to soak water away on its own.
Atwell's original blocks are well past their first fit-out now, so most of our work there is renovation-driven: replacing a tired lawn, pulling up an old driveway for a new crossover, or running fresh retic through a garden that has outgrown its original design. Aubin Grove, being newer and closer to Cockburn Central and the train station, still has pockets of infill building going on, particularly around Rowley Road and the newer streets toward Wandi. Between the two you get a genuine mix of renovation work and the odd new pad, which is a different order book to a suburb still being subdivided.
We load out of Hope Valley and take the Kwinana Freeway north, coming off around Beeliar Drive or Rowley Road depending on which side of the suburb the job is on. It is a straightforward run for our tippers, with none of the tight estate roads you get in a brand new subdivision.
Because the ground is workable yellow sand over limestone rather than clay, red sand does the job for fill, pads and lawn prep without any special treatment. Limestone base is the natural choice under driveways and crossovers, since it is the same material sitting under the block already and locals expect the cream finish. Where a soakwell or drainage line has to push through a limestone shelf, we back it in with blue metal or drainage stone so water still has somewhere to go. Red crushed brick is a common finish over garden beds here too, holding its colour in the sandy, well-drained soil without breaking down.

Limestone base is the standard choice locally, it compacts firm, matches the natural ground and has been the go-to base under Cockburn driveways for years. Recycled concrete roadbase is a solid alternative if you want extra strength.
