Rockingham is the original town on this stretch of coast, a working port and beach suburb long before Baldivis or Secret Harbour existed, and it still carries that older, established feel around the foreshore and the town centre. Streets close to the water go back generations, while the suburb's outer edges toward Cooloongup and Safety Bay have filled in more recently. We deliver here most weeks, usually 20 to 28 minutes from Hope Valley down the Kwinana Freeway and Mandurah Road, for everything from beachfront landscaping to renovation work on some of Perth's older coastal housing stock.

Two kinds of sand in the one suburb

Rockingham sits mostly on Spearwood dune country, yellow sand over a bed of Tamala limestone, the same free draining, easy digging ground found across much of the coastal strip south of Fremantle. Right along the foreshore and the older streets closest to the water, though, the ground shifts to Quindalup dune sand, the youngest and most coastal of Perth's three dune systems, pale, shelly and calcareous, with very little in the way of bearing strength or clay to bind it. It moves easily in the wind if it's left bare, which is why foreshore landscaping and any excavation close to the beach needs a different approach to a standard suburban block a few streets back.

An old town, still working

Rockingham's town centre and foreshore have been through several rounds of redevelopment over the years, and the suburb carries a genuine mix of housing stock, from older beachside cottages being renovated or rebuilt to newer infill closer to the train station. That mix means our work here swings between small homeowner jobs, a trailer load of sand for a garden bed or a driveway patch, and larger commercial and civil work tied to town centre upgrades and foreshore projects. It's a different order book to the growth suburbs further inland, less new estate fill, more renovation, replacement and public realm work around an established coastal town.

Down the freeway to the coast

We come down from Hope Valley on the Kwinana Freeway and Mandurah Road, then cut across on Safety Bay Road or Read Street depending on which part of Rockingham the job is in. It's a longer run than our home patch in Kwinana, but a regular one.

  • Kwinana Freeway to Mandurah Road, then Safety Bay Road
  • Read Street or Rockingham Road for the town centre and foreshore
  • Typically 20 to 28 minutes from our Hope Valley yard
  • Regular runs on through to Safety Bay and Shoalwater

It's a corridor we cover often enough to plan around town centre traffic and school pick up times.

What holds up on Rockingham ground

Limestone base is the standard choice under driveways and crossovers on the Spearwood sand that covers most of the suburb, it compacts hard and matches the cream tone locals expect. Drainage stone earns its keep around soakwells and subsoil drains wherever a dig hits the limestone shelf partway down. Closer to the foreshore, where the ground turns to loose, shelly Quindalup sand, we supply red sand and roadbase to give landscaping and access tracks something firmer to sit on than bare beach sand offers on its own. Cream crushed brick is a popular, low maintenance garden finish across the suburb, holding its colour in the sandy, free draining ground.

Questions

Delivering to Rockingham

Is the ground different near the Rockingham foreshore compared to the rest of the suburb?

Yes. Most of Rockingham sits on Spearwood sand over limestone, but the strip closest to the beach is younger, shelly Quindalup sand with much less bearing strength. It needs a firmer imported base under paths, driveways and any landscaping close to the water.

What driveway base do you recommend for an older Rockingham block?

Limestone base is the standard choice locally and matches what's usually already under the block. If you want extra strength for a heavier driveway, concrete roadbase is a solid alternative.

Do you deliver to renovation jobs as well as new building work in Rockingham?

Yes, a large part of our work in Rockingham is renovation and replacement on older housing stock, alongside commercial and civil jobs tied to town centre and foreshore upgrades.

How long does delivery take from Hope Valley to Rockingham?

Usually 20 to 28 minutes via the Kwinana Freeway, Mandurah Road and Safety Bay Road or Read Street, depending on which part of Rockingham you're in.

Do you deliver further out to Safety Bay and Shoalwater as well?

Yes, both sit on the same run as Rockingham and we deliver there regularly alongside the town centre and foreshore area.
